Fun and food: don’t miss Hong Kong’s sustainable Sunday market

<

Still trying to decide what to do this weekend? Check out Tong Chong Street Market (TCSM), a fun and pet-friendly event filled with good food and drinks. It’s a great way to get outdoors and catch up with friends.

This year, the market in Quarry Bay continues to partner with local social enterprise Honestly Green to bring in more vendors and exclusive dishes under three monthly themes. It all starts with a Coffee Festival, before welcoming a Snowy Christmas, and finally introducing Healthy Eating to celebrate the New Year. Forty stalls will showcase their range of gourmet picks every Sunday; from fresh farmers’ produce to innovative dishes, market-goers will learn more about food sustainability and ‘Explore New Levels of Taste.’ Here’s what there is to look forward to this season.

1. Games Galore
Come and play! TCSM will be filled with games, from a giant Connect Four and a skee-ball machine to classic arcade games like Bubble Bobble. You can earn a coin to play with any purchase of HK$60 at one stall.

2. Reinvented Classics
Foodies, you’re in for a treat. Saigon Etoile is offering a foie gras banh mi, while Cambodunum is stocking Alpine tapas such as Tyrolean dumpling slices and artisan cheese from the Bavarian mountains. Meanwhile, Kong by Bread and Beast will put a novel spin on cheung fun and other classic Chinese dishes to “make Chinese food sexy again”.

3. Hong Kong’s First Gin
“Perfume Trees Gin”, the first gin to be made in Hong Kong, uses five local botanicals – white champaca blossoms, Indian sandalwood, aged tangerine peel, longjing green tea and Chinese angelica – to capture the essence of this vibrant city. Taste it before the official launch, and keep an eye out for their exclusive coffee-flavoured gin cocktail.

4. Green movement

The market commits to promote sustainability in every possible way. Bring your own utensils or rent a cup to reap discounts across the market, reduce waste and help protect the planet. All of your used coffee grounds will be collected and upcycled into soaps. Be sure to also pick up some eco-products on sale at the Sustainability Corner.

5. Espresso Wings
The team behind Wingman loves sharing great food especially wings! They are bringing TCSM-exclusive espresso-flavoured chicken wings. So why don’t you join them and give the wings a try?

6. Coffee Desserts
The delicious vegan-friendly dessert made with agar and coconut milk from It Is Columbian shows just how versatile coffee beans really are. Pair it with the brand’s signature cold brew for a light treat.

7. Taiwanese Flavours
TCSM is known for welcoming the region’s finest vendors, and this year, four Taiwanese vendors are joining us for the Coffee Festival: Paper Street Coffee, Coffee Dpt, Coffee Awake and All Day Roasting Company. They’ll only be around in November, so don’t miss your chance to try out a Taiwanese take on your regular cup of joe.

8. Caffeinated Cocktails
Ralph’s Coffee, the café from famed American brand Ralph Lauren, will offer its full menu. This includes an espresso tonic cocktail, an espresso topped with tonic water and a slice of orange. Another must-try? Their moist, signature brownies made using Ralph Lauren’s grandmother’s recipe.

9. A White Christmas
In December the market will become a winter wonderland filled with festive delicacies and family-fun entertainment. Expect plenty of mulled wine, singers and other surprises!

10. Health-Kick Inspiration
Kickstart the New Year in the right way with vegan, plant-based dishes and products. Peruse a huge range of healthy snacks such as Uncle Saba’s addictive lentil poppadoms, perfect for eating on the go.
