====================

Feeling sluggish, stressed or a little foggy in the head? A nice cup of tea could be your remedy. Find your new favourite brew at Tong Chong Street Market (TCSM) as it returns with Tea Festival from 1 March to 30 April. Featuring a variety of popular brands, get ready to explore this soul-soothing beverage in unexpected ways. Read on for the low-down on the most popular kinds of teas and what to try during your next tea time at TCSM.

Get Energised with White Tea

Known to contain high levels of theine (or caffeine in tea), white tea serves as a wonderful drink to kick-start your metabolism. Young white tea leaves are dried immediately after harvesting, which stops the oxidation process and creates a light and delicate flavour.

Must-try: LockCha’s Organic Narcissus White, which is available exclusively as a cold brew at TCSM. Using leaves from the North Fujian Organic Tea Garden, this white tea variety is produced in the traditional way to retain its rich amino acid content and floral fragrance. The result? An aromatic, naturally sweet and fruity drink.

Refresh with Black Tea

With their rich and distinct flavours, it’s no wonder many black tea blends such as Earl Grey and English Breakfast are popular the world over. Though black tea leaves come from the same plant used for white tea, they are fully oxidised to bring out a deep, nutty taste, which makes a cuppa especially refreshing when paired with greasy or sweet foods.

Must-tries:
Mother Pearl’s Yuen Yeung 2.0, debuting at TCSM. Not your typical yuen yeung, or coffee with tea, this healthier version by Hong Kong’s first plant-based bubble tea brand uses Ceylon black tea in its new tea base, mixed with homemade almond “mylk”, tea jelly and charcoal tapioca. It’s also topped with an organic coffee froth for a rich finish. Feeling adventurous? Pair your bubble tea with Chicken Wings Mountain’s market-exclusive Earl Grey Chicken Wings, which are interestingly topped with earl grey-flavoured cookie crumbs and a citrus tea sauce.

Get Glowing with Green Tea

Green tea processing is similar to that of white tea, but their leaves are picked later, leading to a vegetal and toasty aroma. Many swear by green tea’s health benefits: it’s rich in theine to boost brain power, and antioxidants to support weight loss and improve complexion. So, if you’re feeling and looking tired, a cup of green tea will get you going and glowing.

Must-tries: Le Cha’s Dark Chocolate & Hojicha Infused Cold Brew Tea. It combines the velvety texture of chocolate with the smokiness of roasted Japanese green tea, creating a unique flavour that goes well with a sweet treat – so grab a slice of matcha or hojicha roll cake while you’re at it.

Unwind with Oolong Tea

Partially oxidised, oolong has a complex flavour profile that ranges from lightly floral to toasty and full bodied. It contains more theine than black tea, but is also packed with l-theanine, an amino acid that helps relieve stress – so, expect to feel relaxed, but not drowsy.

Must-try: The Tea Academics’ Phoenix Dancong Seasonal Cold Brew Tea, again market-exclulsive. Sought-after by tea connoisseurs, this oolong blend is famous for its distinctive floral fragrance that’s similar to the Huang Zhi Hua flower. This soothing aroma, together with its gentle sweetness, makes it the perfect pick-me-up.
