Original English Musical Comedy "PROJECT AFTER 6: Cube Culture" Starring 31 Quarry Bay Office Executives and Residents at ArtisTree in May 2018

22 Mar 2018
Are you prisoner to the office cubicle?  Does frigid air-conditioning at work drive you insane? If dull office and never-ending meetings sound familiar, you will relate to “PROJECT AFTER 6: Cube Culture”, an original musical starring 31 office executives from different sectors alongside residents of Quarry Bay. Committed to actively engaging professionals and residents through innovative art and cultural events, Taikoo Place joins Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation (YAF) to present an original English musical, “PROJECT AFTER 6: Cube Culture” in mid-May 2018 at ArtisTree, Taikoo Place’s multi-purpose art venue. Hot on the heels of successful “PROJECT AFTER 6” shows in recent years, Taikoo Place extends the popular programme by welcoming the entire Quarry Bay community for the first time. Through a variety of after work events that sync with the creative synergy of the neighbourhood’s professionals and residents, Taikoo Place is dedicated to connecting the community with art and transforming Taikoo Place into Hong Kong’s premier art hub.

“PROJECT AFTER 6: Cube Culture” cast its talent through a three-week recruitment period in August 2017, receiving more than 200 applicants. Auditions assessing the candidates’ singing and acting skills were conducted, followed by a series of community workshops led by industry professionals from Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts to showcase the musical genre to the general public. In the end, a total of 31 talented cast members were chosen. They are now rehearsing for four months with direction from the show’s creative director Lindsey McAlister and music director Scott Gibson. Working with original music by award-winning British television music composer Nick Harvey, the talented cast put aside their usual routine to discover their inner performing artist.

"PROJECT AFTER 6: Cube Culture" is based on Hong Kong cubicle workers and how they must contend with countless mundane tasks in a fast pace environment. Each scene in the musical intends to trigger a memory that the audience can relate to personally. Inspiration was drawn from everyday life: squishing into a crowded MTR compartment during morning commutes to work, the agony and ecstasy of an office romance. The witty comedy captures snapshots of stories happening in office cubicles and presents with whimsical lyrics and choreography. It aims to connect with the audiences through a universal language of performing art and nurture community harmony. Through the 31 cast members hailing from Quarry Bay with different cultural backgrounds and native languages, their life experiences were incorporated into the show. It aims to resonate with the audiences through tear and laughter.

Founder of YAF, McAlister is the production’s director and writer. She joins BAFTA & Emmy award-winning composer Nick Harvey to create the music for the show. A former member of Hong Kong Youth Arts Foundation, Harvey has composed theme music for many of the BBC’s television programmes. Over the years, McAlister and Harvey have contributed to the Hong Kong's art scene by representing the city numerous times at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Show tickets will be available on Ticketflap starting on 19 April. Stay tuned for more information about the show.
