Life is Art: A pop-up cinema at ArtisTree

29 Aug 2017

ArtisTree continues to bring you the best of what Hong Kong’s arts scene has to offer. In September, this means partnering with MOViE MOViE to present ‘Life is Art’, a special pop-up cinema featuring arthouse films that examine the inner workings of artists and the minds of art aficionados. Here’s what you can expect from the exciting programme running from 5-15 September.

Hiroyasu Ishida Short Film Series
Working in Japan as an animator is no funny business, and trying to break into the industry as an independent animator is even more difficult. At the age of 20, an comic illustration student in Kyoto named Hiroyasu Ishida took the unconventional way into the business by uploading his two-minute short Fumiko’s Confession on the Internet. The zany, breathtaking action comedy picked up a slew of awards and announced the arrival of a great young talent. This series presents three of Ishida’s award-winning shorts, as well as The Portrait Studio by Takashi Nakamura, an animator on iconic anime classics such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Akira.  Tuesdays – 5, 12 September, 1pm

Microfilm Production Support Scheme
Thanks to the success of the Fresh Wave Film Festival, short film competitions have become a viable way to discover young talents in Hong Kong. Organised by the Hong Kong Association of Interactive Marketing, the Microfilm Production Support Scheme offers a chance for local advertising start-up companies and their young directors to showcase their talents by producing short films made in collaboration with local record labels. This programme features a selection of award winners from the scheme’s fourth edition, including Erica, Blind Spot, Reflexion/Reflection and poignant drama Second Hand Bookstore. Fridays – 8, 15 September, 1pm

Suicide Shop

The director of acclaimed films such as Ridicule, Girl on the Bridge and The Man on the Train, Patrice Leconte – previously a comic strip artist – makes his first foray into animation with this animated musical adaptation of Jean Teulé’s novel. Set in a gloomy world where public suicides are outlawed, the film follows a happy child born into a depressed family that makes a living selling equipment for committing suicide. Determined to bring smiles back into the world, the child concocts a plot that may put his family out of work. The Suicide Shop is a richly imaginative and – believe it or not – life-affirming dark comedy. Wednesday 6 September, 6:30pm

Peggy Guggenheim: Art Addict
She introduced the world to some of the greatest artists in modern art. She drank with the likes of Picasso and Dali. She was one of the most important art collectors in contemporary art history. Director Lisa Immordino Vreeland (Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel) reveals the real Peggy Guggenheim in this enlightening documentary. Featuring interviews, archival footage and never-before-heard clips of Guggenheim’s conversations with her biographer, Art Addict is an honest and fascinating portrait about this eccentric (and sometimes controversial) socialite.  Thursday 7 September, 6:30pm

Bolshoi Babylon
It’s not easy for anyone to lead a theatre company, but imagine the immense pressure when that company happens to be a national treasure that is closely monitored by the country’s leaders. With no holds barred access to the members and workings of the company, director Nick Read pulls back the curtain on the one of the world’s finest and oldest ballet companies, the Bolshoi Ballet. The film reveals the exhilaration, frustrations and agony of being a dancer in the Bolshoi. It also examines the corruption and resentment within the company (and to an extent, Russian society) that laid the foundation for the 2013 brutal acid attack on Bolshoi director Sergei Filin.  Wednesday 13 September, 6:30pm

Reset
In 2015, the Paris Opera Ballet hired Benjamin Millepied – Black Swan choreographer and Natalie Portman’s husband – to rejuvenate the prestigious company for a new era. Millepied’s intense 39-day process to bring his first show to the stage is stylishly captured by directors Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai with graceful fluidity and intimacy in this mesmerising documentary. Experience the various hurdles that Millepied faced as leader, from injuries to clashes with management. However, the star of Reset isn’t backstage drama – it’s the dancers and the realisation of Millepied’s vision.  Thursday 14 September, 6:30pm
